Looters require radical measures, not diplomacy – Jeremiah Useni
A Nigerian senator has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to introduce radical measures in his anti-corruption fight if he must recover looted funds, insisting that applying strict democratic principles on looters will only see them walking free and rich. “Public officers stole a lot of money. As far as I am concerned, such people need to be dealt with the very way Jerry Rawlings did in Ghana,” Senator Jeremiah Useni told a crowd at his Jos, Plateau State residence on Saturday when he hosted an Independence Day celebration there. “We must support what President Buhari is doing. We must recover stolen funds.” The Senator representing Plateau-South on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insisted that key members of his party found to have looted the treasury must be given the Rawlings treatment, to serve as a deterrent to other Nigerian public officers. Rawlings, who seized power in a 1997 military coup as a flight lieutenant, led a revolutionary government which executed eight senior military officers, including Lieutenant General Fred Akuffo and two previous heads of state, same year. Rawlings cited alleged corruption and embezzlement of public funds to justify his actions. – Jeremiah Useni
