Low oil prices: Saudi Arabia cuts ministers’ pay to save money

Low oil prices: Saudi Arabia cuts ministers’ pay to save money Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Yesterday Monday cut cabinet ministers’ salaries by 20 percent and reduced other state officials’ benefits in a continuing austerity drive to cope with lower oil revenues. The 160 members of the Shura Council, who include 30 women, will see a 15 percent drop in their annual allowances for housing, furniture and cars, a royal decree said. Council members are appointed by the king to advise cabinet. The decrees which announced the measures did not say how much money would be saved. Since 2014 global oil prices have collapsed by more than half, leaving Saudi Arabia with a record deficit last year. The fall in the kingdom’s main revenue source led to unprecedented subsidy cuts and curbs on government spending. In April this year the king’s son, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, announced the wide-ranging Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy. The effort also seeks a streamlined, mo...

Recession: Governors frustrated us from saving for rainy day – Obasanjo. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Tuesday, accused former governors of contributing to the economic woes afflicting the nation by opposing his government’s efforts to save for the rainy day when the price of oil was higher. Obasanjo, who spoke at the 2016 World Pension Summit in Abuja, lamented that many of the former state executives frustrated his genuine attempt to save a substantial portion of the country’s resources when there was excess oil revenue. Obasanjo said at the event attended by global pension players and top government officials, “I remember when I was in government and I told, particularly, the governors, ‘please let us save for the rainy days.’ They said no!. “There was no rain at that time, now that the rain has come; there is nothing we can fall back on to cushion us.” Obasanjo, however, commended the secured nature of the pension scheme, stating that despite the many years of sleaze i...

Why Nigeria Is In Recession – Makarfi

Image
Why Nigeria Is In Recession – Makarfi Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarafi, chairman, Caretaker Committee, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has stated that the President Muhammadu Buhari government should not be blamed for the current economic recession that is biting the country hard. The issues that built up to land the country in the present economic recession, he said, predated the present administration. He therefore described the present economic situation in the country as a product of collective governance failure which builds up over the years. In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday, Makarfi said the present economic recession has strong roots in structural inadequacies in the economy, which successive governments in the country have refused to address. “Some of these things are structural that even predate this democracy, long before 1999. They are issues that dates back to the time of the military and the intermittent civilian administrations that we had. Depending on ho...

Stop Celebrating Criminals, Ribadu Urges Nigerians A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday urged Nigerians to stop celebrating criminals so that the war against corruption can succeed. Ribadu, who stated this at the 2016 conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management in Abuja, also said that security votes should be abolished. According to him, leadership is essential for the anti-graft war to succeed. He said that leadership at all levels should provide the needed example. He said, “There should also be the will to apply the sanctions. As I have pointed out several times, lack of will by the political leadership to prosecute the war against corruption takes us to nowhere. The political leadership should be determined and it should be seen to be serious about it.” He also added that all government expenditures should be budgeted, adding that extra-budgetary spending should be criminalised and “security votes should...

Cut allowances, don’t sell assets, Falana, Don tell senators

Image
Cut allowances, don’t sell assets, Falana, Don tell senators A human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), and a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Dr. Lawrence Aderotimi, have called on members of the Senate to trim their high allowances and curb government spending instead of calling for the sale of national assets to address the economic recession. In a statement on Thursday, Falana said Nigeria had never benefitted from the sale of national assets in the past because they were undervalued and sold to unscrupulous politicians. Falana said, “If the Senate genuinely desires to contribute meaningfully to the debate on the economy, it should, as a matter of urgency, propose a substantial reduction in the jumbo emoluments of federal legislators which are said to be the highest in the world.” He recalled that the official residence of the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives were sold to Senator David Mark and Mr. Dimeji Bankole respectiv...

Here Are Three National Assets Buhari Must Not Sell.

Image
Here Are Three National Assets Buhari Must Not Sell According to RMAFC, as the debate on whether or not President Muhammadu Buhari should sell off some national assets continue, there are three he shouldn't contemplate. Details below: NLNG According to Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the sale of NLNG is not the best option: “It is the considered view of the Commission that Nigeria’s assets like NLNG and other strategic national resources should not be sold to meet short-term financial obligation.” NLNG is one of Nigeria’s biggest oil companies, employing a large workforce of Nigerians. Like Femi Falana rightly pointed out, most buyers engage in asset-stripping, the sale of NLNG will definitely result in loss of jobs and the placing of one of Nigeria’s prime assets in private hands who may not have the same goals. Refineries The refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna are among the national assets the President is asked to consider sellin...

Ogboli, was asked by presenter Maupe Ogun from the Channels TV Abuja studios to give his view on the circumstances surrounding the freezing of the account of former first lady Patience Faka Jonathan by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) having been introduced as a human rights lawyer. He began by disagreeing with EFCC for placing a no-debit status of Jonathan’s account describing it as high handedness explaining that the companies which are linked to the accounts in question did not belong to the ex-first lady. Okonjo Iweala: SEED OF THIS RECESSION WAS PLANTED DURING THE JONATHAN REGIME DUE TO OUR LACK OF FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE, INABILITY AND LACK OF POLITICAL WILL TO SAVE.

Image
Okonjo Iweala, a woman that had seen it all could come out to say at an American conference that the SEED OF THIS RECESSION WAS PLANTED DURING THE JONATHAN REGIME DUE TO OUR LACK OF FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE, INABILITY AND LACK OF POLITICAL WILL TO SAVE. People should not blame jonathan alone for this because the profligate Nigerian Governors too are culpable. He attempted to save, but the governors demanded to take all the savings citing constitutional right. Money they took and Stole at the same time. Our case is pathetic. Do you know that: Obasanjo's administration earned # 17trn from crude oil sales within eight years and left behind 45bn dollars external reserves and 3.348bn dollars external debt. Yaradua grew the reserves to 64bn dollars within just one year and the administration was able to finance 15 months of imports despite the 2008/2009 world economic meltdown. Hence, Nigeria survived the melt down because of the political will by the administration to save(a great ac...
